VIDEO ~ Round Lake Area Chamberfest EXPO 2012

With the cooler weather it appeared as though local residents were looking for an indoor event which may explain why the 2012 Round Lake Area Chamberfest/EXPO had such a great turnout. Along with the Chamberfest/EXPO, Avon Township teamed up to hold their 3rd annual ‘Touch-A-Truck”. Although there were several big rigs parked in the lot, I didn’t see any kids climbing up into the drivers seats like they did on warmer days. Inside the building there was a big air device for them to climb through as well as a climbing wall that had a steady stream of participants.

The booths were filled with over 40 vendors as well as several local area politicians who seem to never get a day off. Scotty’s Hot Dogs were there to feed the hungry with their popular Vienna beef dogs. I put the photos all into a short video in case you were unable to attend. ENJOY!

“On almost a daily basis I think about the sacrifices our veterans have made and talk to them at Naval Station Great Lakes, the James A. Lovell Federal Health Center or here in Washington, DC,” said Dold. “It was an honor to welcome the Illinois Honor Flight to Washington and to join them at the World War II Memorial. I also had the privilege to present medals to George Ott and Thomas Vana earlier this month- these men have served their country and deserve to have all the medals they have earned.”

Invasion of the Red Admiral Butterflies

No, it’s not as bad as it sounds. The Red Admiral butterfly does not keep you awake at night like the Cicada “tree cricket” nor do they damage any plants or vegetation. Burt Constable of the Daily Herald wrote an interesting article in Thursday’s paper that did a great job of explaining why we are seeing so many of these beautiful little creatures. When I was by my Mothers on Tuesday I had commented on the fact that there were so many Monarch butterflies around her home in Beach Park. I hadn’t gotten a close-up look at them and simply assumed by their colors that they were Monarchs.

After reading Burt’s article I realized that they were actually Red Admiral butterflies and due to the warm weather, they have arrived earlier than normal and in force. Butterfly expert, Doug Taron, told Constable that this specie is “known to have big population booms followed by big population busts” and that their numbers are up at least ten-fold from normal. They migrate here from the Gulf Coast and the adults die off as the cold weather sets in. New batches then hatch in the South and the process starts all over again. Taron mentioned to Constable that the warblers will have a nice spring “as they dine on the fat, juicy, and tempting red Admiral caterpillars that will be appearing soon”.

Congressman Dold Holds Employee Town Hall at Astellas

DEERFIELD, IL – Earlier in the month, U.S. Congressman Robert J. Dold (IL-10) spent the morning at Astellas Pharma US, Inc. in Deerfield touring the facility and meeting with employees. Dold visited the facility as part of his Main Street Jobs Agenda and his ongoing effort to listen to hardworking people of the 10th District and take their ideas back to Washington.

“As a small business owner, I know that the best ideas come from outside of Washington,” said Dold. “I’m here today to listen to your ideas so that we can find common ground and work together to spur the economy. The best ideas come from you and your innovation. I hope that this will be one of many conversations on how we can create an environment for small businesses to grow.”
