Avon Community Garden Harvest Begins

Posted by editor     Category: Avon Township Food Pantry, District 116 Area News

What a difference a month makes when it comes to garden crops. I hadn’t been by the Avon Community Garden and Food Pantry Production Farm for a month but was in the area today and snapped a few photos. As you can see, if you compare it to the July 2oth post, the garden is now reaping results. There was a new volunteer, Julio Duran, busy picking tomatoes to take inside to the Avon Food Pantry. He just started volunteering today but said he would be out of work for a month and rather than sit home watching TV, he decided to become a volunteer. He had already weeded a good portion of the tomato area and planned on doing even more in the days ahead

Some of the other residents plots were also looking good and well maintained

It even looked as though someone has started some more pepper plants. I’m not sure if there is enough growing season left for these little guys.

There is always a need to help control the weeds and water the plants so if you have some spare time and would still like to volunteer call Wendy Warden at 847-401-1135

Joe Walsh Horse Trailer Coming To Your Neighborhood

Posted by editor     Category: District 116 Area News, Political Issues, Round Lake News

We generally see politicians traveling around in a decked out mini-bus or motor home but Republican Congressional candidate for the 8th District, Joe Walsh, is doing something different. He will be pulling a horse trailer around the District that has been wrapped from top to bottom with his message “Let’s Take Our Country Back!” and asking voters at each stop to sign their names on the trailer stating “Yes, I’m in…I want my country back”.

Why a horse trailer?  Walsh’s campaign newsletters explains it like this:

“First, the 8th district is home to many horse farms,” Walsh explained.  “There are horse farms throughout McHenry and Lake Counties from Richmond through Antioch over to Winthrop Harbor and down into Wauconda and Barrington Hills.  I’ve attended three in-district rodeos already this summer.  Even in the more densely populated northwest suburban Cook County portion of the district, we have many residents who are connected to the outdoors and live in the 8th district because of our proximity to open green space.”

”Second, horses, and correspondingly our horse trailer, are a symbol of freedom,”  Walsh continued.  “And that’s really what this election boils down to.  Are we going to allow unchecked federal power to further constrict our cherished personal freedoms or are we going to restore a sense of balance to our citizenry and our government?”

So if, over the next 90 days, you see the Joe Walsh Horse Trailer in your neighborhood it will not have any horse in it. Instead, it will be a moving billboard with hundreds, if not thousands, of signatures of Republicans, Independents, and Democrats in the 8th District who are  concerned about the direction the country is heading.

Candidate Walsh continues to take direct questions at his town hall meetings being held regularly throughout the District. He has also updated his website with a whole new look at www.WalshForCongress.com  where you can find out where Joe will be speaking as well as where you will see the horse trailer if you are interested in signing it.

Avon Community Garden Continues To Thrive

Posted by editor     Category: Avon Township Food Pantry, Avon Township Office, District 116 Area News, Round Lake News

On our way back from a trip to Libertyville we made a stop at the Avon Community Garden and Food Pantry Production Farm and took a couple of photos to show how well it is doing. Even with all the hot and humid days we had over the last few days, it appears as though the Avon Township Food Pantry garden is being well taken care of by the volunteers. Even the private plots look good with a few brand new plots that weren’t planted on our last visit.

Food Pantry Garden Gets Surveillance Cameras

I had asked before the Avon Township Community Garden was planted if they were going to be adding a closed circuit surveillance system and wasn’t surprised when I stopped by a few days ago to see one installed. I had never seen one of the downspout rain water collection barrels and was quite impressed by the two that they are using for watering the vegetables. The water itself is being pumped from the retention pond for the convenience of the volunteers.

Surveillance cameras are now in operation at the Avon Township Community Garden!

The tomatoes have been staked and things are looking good

This is NOT how a Topsy Turvy planter should look!

This is a photo of my own Topsy Turvy planters
My 14 potted tomatoes have grown as high as the hanging planters

Jewel Story is now re-opened for business in the new shopping strip at Hainesville Road and Shorewood. Today, I stopped in and met with the owners and took a few photos to show some of the items that they have to offer.

Edna Kim and her husband, June Kim, have relocated their 5-year old business from 2992  W. Route 60 in Mundelein to the Round Lake Area with a spanking new look! They have lots and lots of fashion and jewelry items as you can see below. Showcases are filled with ‘goodies’ as are the walls and free-standing racks.

With great looking knock-offs of purses and jewelry this will become ladies and young adult’s favorite store once they see what there is to offer. There are loads of items priced at 99 cents and if you don’t find anything at that price, you won’t go broke buying higher priced items.

I urge you to stop in and welcome Edna and June to our community and say you saw it here on District116.org
